Getting Ready for the Class Party

We will have our Autumn class party on Friday, October 28 from 8:30-9:30 AM. Your child should wear his/her costume to school and then have their school clothes on under the costume or in their backpacks. We will change out of the costume after the party. Thanks to all the parents who are helping with the party! I am sure that we will have a wonderful time. Today was Teddybear Day in first grade. Students went to 3 different stations between the First Grade classrooms and Literacy. I hope to add some pictures of the Teddies this weekend. A Mathematics Thoughtful Problem to Solve: Please read this problem with your child and have them record their solution and HOW they solved the problem as a comment below. Every child that shares their thinking in the comment section can go to the treasure box on Monday when we will share this same problem in class. Please log on and record your child's thinking about the problem before Monday!!! *Sam had 5 balloons. Kim gave him 6 more. How many balloons does he have now? Solve the problem and explain the process that you used to figure out that 11 was the answer. Enter your thinking about this problem in the comment area below. Have a great weekend with your child!

  1. One way to think about the problem is to draw all the balloons that Max had. Draw 5 balloons, then six more for the balloons that Kim gave him. If you count all the balloons you get 11. There are many more ways to prove that there are eleven balloons: what are you thinking?--Mrs. Aadland

  2. AJ drew 5 circles on a piece of paper and wrote a number under each. She then drew 6 more circles with numbers to get to 11!

  3. Canyon says the answer is 11. He says he solved it by counting out 5 fingers for Sams ballons, then counting 5 more fingers for the other ballons then adding one more because there were 6 and he only had 5 more fingers.

  4. Ty used his counting chips. He started with 5 and added 6 more chips. The answer is 11. Then Ty used his fingers. He started with 5 and then counted six fingers to get to 11.

  5. Way to go Ashley, Canyon and Ty! Sounds like you were all very thoughtful about this problem. I noticed that you all had your own ways to think about this problem and you used the 'Counting ALL' strategy!

  7. Michael used the part-part total strategy to solve the problem. He knew that 5+6=11 and so that was his answer.

  8. Josie and I decided to use pennies to solve the problem. Josie put five pennies on a napkin and then Josie put six pennies on the other side of the napkin. Then Josie looked at the five pennies and knew it was five because she saw it on a die before. She looked at the six pennies and counted on until she got to 11 which was the right answer.
