Today we discussed Veteran's Day and the concept of the meaning of the colors of the American Flag.
A fun and informative site we explored is: http://www.va.gov/kids/k-5/games_activities.asp
Students are bringing home our first grade Thanksgiving Family Project in their Friday Folders. Please help your child disguise the paper turkey and return on Monday November 14. We will display the disguised turkeys on a bulletin board for Grandparents day on Tuesday November 22.
And now....another Mathematics Problem:
Kim bought ___ (9 or 19 or 29) pencils at the store. She gave 7 of the pencils to Sam. How many pencils does Kim have now?
Please choose the beginning number according to the level of challenge you child would like to solve or solve the problem 3 times using the different starting number each time. Use the comment box below and have your child explain their thinking about how to solve the problem. Students who post to the comment box will pick from the treasure box at school on Monday.
Have a great 3 day weekend with your child!
Ask your child, "Is this a some, some more problem or a some, some went away problem?" Many students will see the relationship of this subtraction problem to count all nine and then cross out the seven pencils that Kim gave to Max. Some students may see that they count backwards from nine to seven to get the two that Kim has left. There are many ways for young mathematicians to think about a solution to this problem. If your child solves it with one strategy....can they think about how to come to the solution with another strategy?
ReplyDeleteI asked AJ how many would be left if Kim started with 19 pencils. AJ wrote down 19 lines on a piece of paper and then crosses out 7. She then numbered the lines left on her paper to get her answer of 12. After that, I asked her to start with 9 pencils, she was able to do that in her head. She explained that 9-7 is just 2. When asked about 29 - 7, she went back to her paper and drew lines and crossed out...getting to the number 22.
ReplyDeleteEthan started with 9-7 he drew out the number of pencils Kim had and then crossed out 7 and saw that only 2 were left. He did the same thing with 19-7 and got 12. With 29-7 he drew 29 pencils and numbered them as he went. Then, he crossed out 7 and looked to see that Kim had 22 left.
ReplyDeleteBrady started with 19. He drew 7 tick marks and counted back from 19. He did 9-7 in his head. Brady identified the pattern and figured that Kim had 22 pencils left. We wrote out the problems on a piece of paper.
ReplyDeleteWow! Great thinking AJ, Ethan and Brady. Will you remind me tomorrow to get the treasure box down so you can each pick a prize for commenting about your way to solve the subtraction problem.
